Louisiana company developing plane tracker

A Louisiana company says it's working toward federal approval of satellite GPS technology that would provide second-by-second tracking of aircraft anywhere in the world.

The FAA's latest air traffic control technology - now used in Houston - employs ground tracking stations.

The Virginia-based Flight Safety Foundation called Tuesday for satellite-based tracking systems to become industry standard.

Globalstar CEO Jay Monroe says the system developed by his company and Alaska-based ADS-B Technologies uses a smartphone-sized antenna on top of an aircraft to beam signals to Globalstar's 24-satellite network.

Monroe says the companies hope to have FAA approval for the system in a year to 18 months.

Real-time tracking surfaced as an issue after controllers lost track of Malaysian Air's Flight 370 bound for Beijing on March 8.
